The opening song on February 15 was "God Bless America", led by Zack Longley. The invocation was given by Josiah Welch, followed by lunch of either sliced steak or baked scallops.

Guests and Visiting Rotarians

The guest book was read by Mary Murray. Our guests were Dave Marshall, Steve Smith of NHS, Brad Balkus from the Middle School, Myron Moss a retired NHS teacher and Todd Tanger, owner of WNBP Radio.

Student Guests

Cindy Johnson introduced Jarrad Hubbard and Brendan Culverwell, both Juniors from Triton High School.

Both boys are involved in community service and sports. Jarrad plays soccer and Brendan is on the wrestling team and plays football and baseball. He is also on the science team. They are just starting to look at colleges.

Our song for the day was "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" in honor of Valentine's Day.

Happy Dollars

Cindy Johnson was a member of the Mod Squad that won the spelling bee contest last Thursday night. She was happy to make a donation. She was also pleased that her son James has written a play which will be part of a competition between high schools. Norm Jutras was happy to give a dollar for becoming a grandfather again. John Salter said the balloon deliveries went well with good participation. $1,100 was raised which will go towards the purchase of a new BBQ grill. Ted Atkinson was grateful that he had a talking road map to assist with the delivery of the balloons.

Fines

A "Scooter Fine" was assessed to John Horne who left early. Arlene collected $2.00 from everyone not wearing his or her name badge. We have $1,000 in the fund now.

Announcements

  • Liz Cullen thanked us all for nominating her to be District Governor for the year 2007-2008. She espeially thanked Geri Dorr for attending the meeting in Cape Elizabeth, Maine where she was chosen. Liz mentioned that she will be the 5th District Governor from the Newburyport Club. The first was Norman Russell, then Bill O'Brien (Mark's father), Dr. Andrew Longley (Zack's father), George Cashman and now Liz.
  • Jay Howlett is working on a September golf tournement.

Program  Mary Murray introduced Steve Smith, a teacher at NHS and Brad Balkus a teacher from the R.A. Nock Middle School, who gave us a slide presentation of what the students are learning in the Engineering Technology classes. This course has replaced what we used to know as the Industrial Arts program.

Myron Moss was also a quest who has retired from NHS and now works for Parametric Technology. They have partnered with NHS and donated computer software and a computer lab. We were shown how science and engineering overlap using a CAD program to design and build a bridge. Using a CNC milling machine the students take a block of wood, build a CO2 car and race it down the track to test it. Students from 6th grade participate in these programs. The Newburyport Education Business Coalition bought the CNC milling machine.

There was a brief question and answer period and Geri presented them with a Rotary mug filled with candy.
