Last week was a snowy week and your Editor wasn't able to attend the meeting. But we do have some events coming up which require your attention.
February 6 - Frigid Fiver Road Race
A list has been circulating showing everyone's duties on that day. It is also enclosed with this newsletter. Please check to see where you are needed. We have 75 pre-registered runners and will probable have just as many register on that day. Be at the Bresnahan School at 10:30 and we will put you to work. The chicken soup at the end of the race is traditionally made by the Park Lunch and Mike Doyle will continue that tradition this year.
February 14 - Love on a String
Kate Kelly reports that she has 25 orders so far and expects everyone to have ordered their balloons by next Tuesday. Remember, the proceeds from this fund riser goes towards a new BBQ grill.
February 23 - 100th Anniversary Dinner
Sue Christ reports that she has reservations for 75 people to date. The dinner at Nicholson Hall will start with a cocktail hour and cash bar from 6-7 and dinner from 7-9. The Newburyport Five is our corporate sponsor for this event.
Today's meeting, February 1, opened with the singing of "America the Beautiful" and invocation by Bob Kirsner. We dined on macaroni and cheese or beef teriyaki and then Zack led us in singing
# 11 in the songbook, "Smile, Sing a Song".
Guest Book
The guest book was read by Karl Gray. Guests were Melinda Wagner, Amesbury; Henry Wiksten, Hamilton Wenham; David Shaw, Haverhill; and Jay Howlett?!
Student Guests
Ted Atkinson introduced today's students from Newburyport High School.
Sheila Jarnes is a junior and runs cross country. She works at Gram's and Mary Jane. She has been involved in Interact for two years and enjoys History class, Art and photography because they are fun. She would like to continue her education in the medical field.
Taylor Nelson is a senior and a member of Interact. She is involved in many activities such as Editor of the school magazine, Student Council, Varsity Tennis Captain, Art, Creative Writing, Docent Program, internship with art teacher, Marshall Staff and Grease, The Musical. She is also a member of a new program called "Best Buddies" where one becomes a buddy to a special needs student. In Taylor's case, they do art projects together. Taylor plans to attend Mount Holyoke College and further her art interests.
Birthdays and Anniversaries
Happy birthday to Mark O'Brien, Guy Navarra, Gerry Hirsch and Doc Wheeler. Doc Wheeler is celebrating his 90th birthday and for the occasion we had a birthday cake! Congratulations to a wonderful man. Anniversary wishes to John Allison.
Happy Dollars
Jay Howlett told us a story about his son who is a basketball star and how he was injured very badly. Jay got in touch with Richard Bernier and Richard treated him with his magic hands, enabling Jay's son to get back on the basketball court and rack up more points. George was happy that his grandchildren, triplets, are coming back home from Texas. He says Rosemary hasn't been this excited since their wedding night. Sheila paid five Happy Dollars because she and Russ bought a new building for their business. They worked with Austin Spinella and Minco and borrowed money from the Institution for Savings. The property is insured by Chase and Lunt and the legal work was done by Connolly & Connolly. Pay up, everybody, Pres. Geri is pleased for the increase in news coverage lately thanks to John Macone.
Raffle
The raffle of $21 was won by Peter Johnston.
