The November 2nd meeting opened with the singing of "America the Beautiful". The invocation was given by Jim Hughes. After lunch of grilled salmon, grilled haddock, or beef stew John Budzyna and Ted led us in singing #47 in the song book..."You're a Grand Old Flag".

Guests and Visiting Rotarians

The guest book was read by Zack. Visiting us today were Tim Placey, PDG (our program speaker); Scott Murray, Newburyport Postmaster and guests of Al Hirsch; Nancy Gordon of Portsmouth rotary and Harry Wickston.

Student Guests

The student guests were introduced by Cindy Johnson. Kaitlyn Mobrey and Brittany, both juniors at Triton, stood and told us a little bit about themselves. They are both very active in sports and leaders clubs.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

Happy Birthday to Paul Slegaitis (11/2) and Claudia Harris (11/5). An anniversary was announced for Mike Strem (10/23), but Mike said that was wrong. His anniversary is really in July, so Pres. Geri paid the fine.

Happy Dollars

Mike paid a dollar to say he was happy to be married 37 years in July. Arlene Santa Fe announced that the YWCA had a fund raiser last weekend and it was very successful. Sheila Johnson was happy that her grandson scored the winning touchdown in last Friday nights football game. Liz Cullen was happy to have been a host for the GSE team last week. Larry Olney is exited that his son Matt is engaged and the girl's family doesn't want any help with the wedding. And finally, Geri Dorr is happy for all those who helped hosting the GSE team. Tim Placey also paid a dollar because he was happy to be in Newburyport.

George Cashman asked to speak about a gentlemen who recently passed away. His name was Dennis S. and he was a Rotary Scholar from Greece who spent much time with George and the Cashman family in the 50's and 60's. Dennis actually ended up bringing his whole family here from Greece and married an American girl.

Program

Liz Cullen introduced Tim Placey, PDG. Tim has been a Rotarian for 30 years and lives in Cumberland, Maine.

November is Rotary Foundation Month, and Tim is Chairman of the Foundation. It gave him great pleasure to present a Paul Harris Award to Mike Strem today. He then presented a slide show featuring where some of the Foundation money is spent. The many avenues of spending include literacy, clean water, health needs, a fire truck to Honduras, deaf children, hunger and sanitation. Over the year's our club has contributed $140,000 to the Foundation.

Geri thanked Tim for his talk and presented him with a coffee mug filled with candy.
